Frequently Asked Questions

What is different about IHS?

Most farrier schools operate with the focus on getting students in and out as fast as they can. We have found this method to be not only ineffective, but dangerous. It is not hard to see the USA has a giant shortage of professional farriers. On the flip side, most farrier schools are full of students. Can you see the disconnect? Graduates from short courses are rarely prepared which has caused a poor attrition rate in the industry.  Our focus is to train professionals that will make a meaningful difference in the horse world. We are different because we are very invested in your long term success.

Will I become a "Certified Farrier" upon graduation?

The short answer is maybe. The long answer is that the American Farriers Association Certification test is extremely difficult. You may have seen other farrier courses that claim you will be a certified farrier when you leave. This is false advertisement. The Certification Test cannot be given by instructors at any farrier school. You must go to the AFA website and find a test in a state near you upon graduation. The good news is that our curriculum is designed around the test and will prepare you to pass when you take it! If you become ready while you are a student, we will sponsor you to travel to a AFA sanctioned test!

What is the Day-to-Day Schedule

We start every morning with horse anatomy from around 8am-9am. During this time the public starts to bring us horses to work on. From 9am-12pm we are working on shoeing and trimming for the public. 12pm-1pm is the lunch break. 1pm-4pm we are finishing the horses and working on forging projects. You are expected to study and work every evening after hours if you want to pass your final.

Can I go to just 1 trimester and start shoeing full time?

This is a loaded question. We have had rare students with quite a bit a natural ability that don't need all 3 trimesters. 9 out of 10 students need more time and supervision than one trimester. If all three trimesters are not within your possibilities, you may come and try a trimester and see where you are when you finish. You will know if you need more education or not.

What is the housing situation?

When you enroll in any of our courses, you automatically qualify for free campus housing. All the students live in a beautiful 3 story ranch home. Gender specific housing areas in the ranch home are enforced.

Will I work on live horses in the first Trimester?

Yes. You will work on live horses almost every day of your course at IHS.
